West Riding Stage

(Posted on February 8, 2008)

The West Riding Stage is once again under threat, Seemingly we hav fallen foul of the Planning Laws by constructing our replacement canopy, Our first application was refused and our second was subsequently withdrawn after we recieved information that it was also set for refusal. We have been back to the drawing boards and taken advice from the planners and hopefully this time we get the go ahead for the stage.

We would ask that anyone who has a comment to make preferably supportive of the West Riding stage comment on the planning portal via the following link

Mary's Final Feed

(Posted on July 25, 2007)

Last Tuesday, the 17th of July our beloved chef Mary hung up her apron strings and called time in the kitchen. For those in the know, Mary’s lunches have been legendary. The West has had countless excellent newspaper reviews thanks to the imagination and dedication shown by Mary over the last 13 years.

It was a great day and night with the kitchen selling out of food as both the beers and the tears flowed. Mike Field and all the staff were on hand to present Mary with her very own plaque to commemorate her service to the pub and all its customers.

We are assured that Mary will be spending her days from now walking her dog and cooking for her husband Ronald. Lets hope he’s got a big appetite – he’ll need it!

Although Mary will be surely missed we are delighted to announce that a suitable replacement has been appointed to continue the good work. Diane, a Dewsbury lass, has returned to the town after years spent running pubs of her own and she promises that the quality fayre we have become accustomed to will continue.

Diane’s Lunches are served Monday to Friday 12 – 3. Ale Day Breakfasts are served 10 – 4 each Saturday and Pie and Curry Night will continue as normal every Tuesday and Wednesday.

Beer Festival

(Posted on June 8, 2007)

BB&B's was the most successful beer festival to date and we couldn't do it without the help of our dedicated staff, local CAMRA branch and of course our loyal customers!

At 11.45pm on Saturday Rob announced to the Beer Garden that Dewsbury had drunk the festival bar dry! Never before have we run out of beer on day 3 of a 4 day event. Over 1800 pints of real ale were sold on the outside bar alone.

In a blind tasting our Real Ale judges on Thursday evening voted Phoenix's Wobbly Bob as Beer of the Festival but customers voted for Oakham's Bishops Farewell. Which was your winner?

Dates for your Diary

(Posted on April 4, 2007)

Now that we have matters sorted out with our stage its full steam ahead with our preparations for our summer beer festivals.

our Beer-Jing ale-ympics  will be held  29th May – 1st June.

We will have over 30 different beers on show plus live entertainment all weekend with live bands performing throughout. There will also be plenty of food and we have booked wall – wall sunshine throughout proceedings, so make a note in your diary.

As a pre cursor our sister pub the Cellar Bar in Batley will be holding its Wild & Mild Beer festival on the 1st – 3rd may.  There will be over 10 beers on show and of course live music every day of the festival and loads of food to keep you going. Their last festival in October proved to be a massive success and was completely sold out well before the last days so note this one in your diary  as one to visit early to avoid disappointment.

Full Steam Ahead

(Posted on January 22, 2007)

A Class 5 Steam Engine passed through Dewsbury Staion on Saturday 20 January 2007 at 15.14.

A well attended crowd of enthusiasts gathered to watch and record the rare event.

Many thanks to Ley & Tiny and Ash Milnes for these wonderful images of the train.

Winter Beer Fest 2006

(Posted on December 3, 2006)

Thanks to all Beer Lovers, who travelled far and wide for the event, the West Riding's 1st Charity Winter Beer Festival was a huge success and will certainly be a annual festival.

Dewsbury based brewery, Anglo Dutch's latest brew - Sarah Barnes' Stark Raven Wild was the first beer to run off on Friday night and it's the first beer that has ever run off on the first night of a festival!!  (Don't worry if you missed it at the weekend as there's another cask waiting to go on the bar as early as tomorrow and there'll be some over Christmas).

As well as the £800 raised from Brewery donations and Sponsors, £119 was collected in the charity boxes.  The West Riding will make up the rest to £1000.  A cheque will be presented to the Wakefield based Charity early next week.

West is a 'Flagsheep' Baar

Paul Theakston from Blacksheep Brewery presented us with a Certificate for becoming a 'Flagsheep' Baar!

Beer Fest 2006

(Posted on June 6, 2006)

This years Beer Festival (June 1/2/3/4 - 06) was an amazing event, with over 26 barrels of beer, great food and some spiffing entertainment enjoyed by regular and new visitors to the West.

Aptly named 'The World Sup 2006', the football themed Beer Festival took place just one week before the actual World Cup started in Germany.

Guests were invited to Judge all the Beers (in sample size glasses!) and vote for the Bear of The Festival.

The Red Lion Chardonale came out trumps and won the title of West Riding World Sup 2006 Winner.

The event ran from Thursday 1st June to Sunday 4th June, and saw a different style band play on the new stage each evening.  Kirklees Music School Swing Band were the first to 'swing their thang' on Thursday evening, followed by super funk outfit, Fresh Funk Five.  An Irish Session was held on Friday evening with Reel High providing traditional music.  Things took a turn for the rock when The Pretty Machine played on Saturday evening, and the event was closed on Sunday afternoon with the legendary (at least in North Kirklees), and entertaining Eric The Viaduct.

Huge thanks go out to 16th Dewsbury Scouts who BBQ'd for us the whole weekend, and of course to everybody who made a trip down to the West that weekend.
